Introducing the Money Value report: is the business getting richer?

Every business owner eventually asks the same two questions: is the business actually getting richer, and can I afford to invest? The trouble is the books don't always answer plainly. A big customer pays a week early and the bank looks great; a supplier run goes out and it looks grim — neither tells you whether the underlying business is moving in the right direction.

The new Money Value report in Vali Accounting is built to cut through that. It's a management view of cash health that smooths out the timing of who paid when, so you can see the real trend rather than the noise.

Every figure in the screenshots below is illustrative demo data for a fictional company, Brightwater Trading (Pty) Ltd — not real client numbers.

What it tracks

Money Value follows four numbers, month by month:

  • Bank — what's actually in the account.
  • Debtors — what customers owe you.
  • Creditors — what you owe suppliers.
  • Net Position — Bank + Debtors − Creditors: the single number for what the business is worth in working capital.

For each one it shows three things that matter more than any single day's balance — the monthly Average (which smooths out early- and late-paying customers), the Peak (the high-water mark for the month), and the Low (how close the business came to running dry).

An outlook in plain English

At the top of the report sits a plain-language outlook — a weather-style read like "Going strong" or "Turning around". It weighs this month against last, alongside the change over the whole period, names the main driver ("mainly Bank up"), and gives a short, encouraging steer ("room to invest or treat the business"). It's the kind of summary a good bookkeeper writes for a client — generated automatically. A trend line chart sits beside it, so one glance tells you whether things are climbing.

See exactly what's behind every number

Numbers are only useful if you can trust them. Click any figure and Money Value drills straight down to the underlying transactions — the invoices, receipts and bills that made it up — so you, or your client, can see precisely where a number came from.

Built for real bookkeeping

  • Bank basis toggle — measure on your ledger book balance, or on the imported bank statement, whichever you reconcile to.
  • CSV and PDF export — drop it into a client pack or a board file in one click.
  • Stops at today — no invented future months; it only shows periods that have actually happened.

Why it matters

Most reports tell you what already happened. Money Value turns the books into a forward-looking decision tool — a clear, defensible answer to "are we getting richer, and can we afford to spend?". For bookkeeping practices, it's a ready-made talking point for every client review. For business owners, it's the number to check before committing to that new hire, vehicle or stock order.

It's available now in Vali Accounting.
